Translating any subtitle from one language to another starts with creating a source timed-text script formatted as subtitles adhering to character limits and good subtitling practices. Then a professional subtitle translator, native in the target language and expert in the source language, uses specialist subtitling translation software to translate, edit and retime the translated subtitles. There are hundreds of free and paid subtitling tools available. Popular free tools include Subtitle Edit and Aegisub. At the Higher-end, paid and cloud-based apps like Telestream CaptionMaker and IBM Watson Media are popular.
Movie subtitling translation for Netflix, TV or Cinema releases is always performed by a qualified audiovisual translator working in one language pair, e.g. Korean > English. Using the movie script, they will first cue (split and time-stamp) the script as subtitles and then translate and adapt the speech into a time-text format like SRT, STL or XML.
