The Welsh language finds its origins in Common Brittonic, which was the Celtic language spoken by the ancient Celtic Britons, and it is classified as Insular Celtic. While an exact timescale hasn't been agreed upon by historians, it is thought that Common Brittonic began to break up into constituent languages, with Primitive Welsh forming around 550 BCE.

What we understand as Primitive Welsh today is thought to have evolved into use by 800 BCE. Some of the oldest written records of Welsh are in Old Welsh, dating from the 9th to 11th Centuries. Like other languages, Welsh continually developed into what historians classify as its Middle form (called Middle Welsh) by the 12th and 14th centuries. Then Modern Welsh classifies Welsh from the 15th century onwards. However, Modern Welsh further divides into the sub-classifications of Early Modern Welsh (15th-16th century) and Late Modern Welsh (16th century onwards).

Fun Fact: There are numerous Welsh-speaking colonies in Argentina, totalling about 50,000 people. There are even signposts in both the Welsh language and Argentinian Spanish.

With such a historic language comes initiatives to keep it alive and in use. Today, we see Welsh still used in everyday life in certain regions of Wales.
