Discover your true self and learn about the Persona 5 voice actors
Save the world from the oncoming ruin by stealing the hearts of the wicked and corrupt. Join the Phantom Thieves and pull off heists in the world of hearts, the Metaverse, to help bring proper justice to the world.
In one world, serve your time as a normal school student and build bonds with your companions; in the other, fight through shadows and take on all sorts of enemies to steal distorted treasures from cognitive palaces created from some strange force that threatens the world.
Bound by the chains of circumstance and society. The Persona
5 Protagonist is unfairly condemned for a crime he is not guilty of but must
suffer for regardless. A consequence of this means that he must move to Tokyo
city for school. He has no friends and is an outcast for his criminal record;
his situation should crush him.
Until he awakens his Persona...
In the Metaverse, the alternate world governed by the power
of hearts, he becomes Joker, the leader of the Phantom Thieves of Hearts. His
goal in the game is to change the wicked ways of those who have become corrupt
and twisted by distorted, evil desires and make them see themselves for the
monsters they are.
In this form, with this power, Joker becomes a beacon for
others to awaken to their true powers and become free from the societal
shackles that bind them. He is the spirit of rebellion.
As is expected from a Persona protagonist, Joker barely
speaks in the game. A calculated decision to make it easier for the player to
project themselves into the character's position. Although this doesn't mean
that Joker never talks - he has a handful of lines in the game, and he
shouts the line of each of the 192 personas (including:
"Izanagi-no-Okami Picaro" - Yikes!).
Xander Mobus is the Persona 5 voice actor for Joker. While
there are few lines that he has to provide, he does offer them in a fashion
that has just enough personality to make each line engaging whilst not
overriding the self-projection that the player has on the Protagonist.
Xander has a busy career in anime localisation and video
games. He has voiced characters in some of the most well-known franchises in
these genres, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, Demon Slayer, Super Smash Bros. and more. His work as Joker extends beyond
being a Persona 5 voice actor. He also has returned to the role for the
sequels, spin-offs, and anime iterations. The anime is an excellent way for
Xander to show off what he can do, as he records entire conversations for Joker
in place of player interaction.
Ryuji is brash, obnoxious, intense, and the first person
that accepts the Protagonist as a friend. He knows what it is like to be an outcast
and treated as an outsider, so he naturally gravitates toward Joker. Ryuji is a
"problem student", which he is proud of; it means he isn't afraid to
take a stand of rebellion.
He is a very expressive individual, not afraid to show off
his anger, enthusiasm or compassion. Ryuji is also passionate about the track,
a sport that he excelled at until the game's first villain injured him,
Kamoshida. Since that moment, his delinquency is a form of coping mechanism to
deal with the fact that he was wronged by society. Beneath the tough exterior,
Ryuji cares deeply for the people in his life. His friends, his mother, and his
own morals are things he holds dear, and he will not betray them for anything.
Max Mittelman's work as the Persona 5 voice actor for Ryuji
speaks to the heart of the character. The fact that he is aggressive and
explosive means that Max Mittelman must be highly expressive in his treatment
of the character's voice. Mittelman captures the essence of Ryuji well, as he
remains very relatable and emotionally resonant, despite his extreme attitude.
He also offers some fun to events, as Ryuji is often the butt of everyone
else's jokes.
A loyal companion for the Protagonist with a mysterious
past. While Morgana appears to be a cat, the actual origin for this character
is unknown, initially and a central question throughout the plot. Morgana
serves many jobs in Persona 5; chiefly, Morgana teaches the player the ropes of Phantom Thief. He is an invaluable member of the team.
While Morgana is in cat form in the real world, he looks far
different in the Metaverse. He is an anthropomorphic, bipedal creature that
looks somewhat cat-like, with a mask covering his face. However, Morgana
possesses unique abilities in the Metaverse, one of which is shapeshifting - as
he frequently transports the crew around as a van.
As a character, Morgana is logical and empathetic, often the
first to speculate on the Metaverse rules and feel deeply for
people in trouble or with bad pasts. These are some of the most important
traits to being a successful Phantom Thief, so he is a great fit.
Balancing all these faces to the character while retaining
the core cutesy mascot position Morgana fills is a tall order. Fortunately, the
Persona 5 voice actor for Morgana is Cassandra Lee Morris, a veteran voice
actor in anime and video game characters. The exaggerated behaviour of the
anime style is no easy feat to master. Still, Cassandra Lee Morris brings her
extensive experience in this domain to the forefront to provide the perfect
sound for Morgana.
Ann is one of the more playful members of the Phantom
Thieves. She is kind, caring, and always goes out of her way to help others in
need. She is considered a beautiful young woman and aspiring model, although
these are not necessarily boons.
Like the rest of the crew, Ann is sidelined by society because
people find her attractive. Many men are only interested in exploiting her, and
many women do not trust her, so she is devoid of any real friendships. The
first villain also tries to coerce and use her based on these elements of Ann's
character.
She dresses in bright clothes, a signifier of her
nonconformity - she is sick of trying to appease Japanese society. The seeds of
rebellion are sown and drawn out through her time with the Phantom Thieves, and
she joins the crew as a founding member.
Ann Takamaki behaves antithetically to how she appears; she
is proud, headstrong, stubborn and loves to eat. Erika Harlacher lends
her voice to the character of Ann as a Persona 5 voice actor and each of its
related sequels. Erika has experience in anime projects, which is fortunate, as
Ann has a patently anime-esque behaviour, so her expertise helps her fit
the character nicely.
While Ann starts as isolated, helpless, and regressive, once
she awakens to her Persona, her attitude changes significantly. This leap in
her personality is replicated and matched by Erika Harlacher, who alters her
performance to match this newfound lease on life.
An artist in every fibre of his being, Yusuke has devoted
himself entirely to the pursuit of artistic perfection. Aesthetic is something
that he seeks consistently; it drives his life. He is a competent swordsman,
favouring the precision of a Samurai sword over a more blunt instrument - a
reflection of his skill with a paintbrush.
Yusuke is the most eccentric member of the Phantom
Thieves by a large margin. He sees the world differently from others, which is a
term of endearment and peculiarity. His strange behaviour manifests in various
ways, like the fact he will be unable to feed himself yet happily spends money
on aesthetic lobsters...
He is first encountered during the game's second arc, where
he is under the tutelage of a master painter, Madarame. Yusuke feels a sense of
debt to Madarame for taking him in, even if this forces Yusuke to conform to a
life of servitude and exploitation. When his Persona comes to him, his
rebellious nature takes shape and his personality becomes much freer.
Matthew Mercer is the voice actor who performs as Yusuke in
Persona. Mercer has an especially impressive catalogue of roles under his belt,
in video games and animation alike. He has performed as iconic figures, like
Luke Skywalker in Star Wars Battlefront II and McCree in Overwatch.
As a Persona 5 voice actor, He brings a unique flair to the
character that helps him stand apart from the rest of the Phantom Thieves. His
deeper pitch and whimsical nature are perfectly captured by Mercer's
performance, helping to sell Yusuke as an older, artistic member of the crew.
As intelligent as she is dangerous - which is very - Makoto
Nijima joins the Phantom Thieves during the third arc of the game, and she
quickly becomes the brains of the gang. She is a calculated, quick-thinking,
adaptable leader who quickly brings some stability and order to the chaotic
group. She has tremendous pressure put on her to live up to the expectations
placed by her sister and teachers.
Makoto is the student council president at school, an
authority on the rest of the student body experience. This reflects her desire
to exceed and help lead. However, she is cornered and used as a pawn by the
adults and teachers to hold up their status quo. Ironically, this makes Makoto
quite unpopular and detached from her peers, as they consider her to be a
proponent of the corrupt authority of the school. She is used and sidelined
until she breaks free to become a Phantom Thief and fuel her rebellious spirit.
Once she has joined the gang, she shows how much deeper she
is than what shows on the surface. While she is prim and proper in typical
daily life, beneath this, she is interested in martial arts (Aikido) and
motorcycles. Making for a multifaceted personality.
Makoto is kind and sensible, so she quickly becomes the mind
of the group. This means she is somewhat critical of others when they act in a
manner that falls short of her expectations - especially Ryuji. However, her
pent up anger comes out when she fights, which often shocks and disturbs other group
members. Oh yeah, and she is scared of the dark...
Voice acting pro Cherami Leigh fills the role of Makoto.
Cherami Leigh is a highly experienced voice actor in animation and video games.
Some of her most notable roles in anime are Lucy Heartfilia in Fairy Tail and
Asuna Yuuki in Sword Art Online. In gaming media, she plays the female
main character in CD Projekt Red's Cyberpunk 2077.
Each of these roles is distinct and different, a testament
to the vast range of acting abilities that Cherami has to offer. Makoto is a
varied character, so Cherami can draw from her extensive career to find the
correct balance between the character and her fists of fury.
Alibaba, the hacker supreme, Futaba Sakura, is a child
prodigy capable of breaking through any firewall and extracting any information
via the internet. Futaba thinks at a mile a minute with a keen comprehension of
all things digital. As a Phantom Thief, she protects the crew from cyber
attacks, helps plan and hack, and serves as the gang's navigator when they are
in the Metaverse. Her noncombatant Persona, Necronomicon, is a support Persona.
Therefore, she does not directly fight, instead, she offers tactical advice and
occasionally will buff the team's powers.
She is certainly an odd kid. Since her mother's death, at
the hands of a shadowy organisation, Futaba has been a recluse and shut-in. She
refuses to go outside and accesses the world through her computers rather than
experiencing it. She has no friends and is generally depressed - she needs to
break free of her self-imposed shackles and bring justice to her mother's
killers.
Futaba's personality is quirky; she often talks in video
games and computer terminology to describe situations and feelings, reflecting
her computer-centric lifestyle. She is quick to hide behind Joker if
overwhelmed, but she will do whatever it takes to help the Phantom Thieves
complete their mission when the chips are down.
Erica Lindbeck is the Persona 5 voice actor for Futaba
Sakura's English dub. She trained for a film career from a young age, looking
to become an actor in film, but found limited success. After turning her
attention to voice acting, Erica has successfully taken part in various big-name
franchises, like Evangelion and Nier: Automata. She is also the
voice for Barbie in various Barbie films.
She had great control and influence over the direction that
she wanted to take with Futaba's voice. While there was an established
character from the initial Japanese version of Persona 5, the English Persona 5
voice actors were given a chance to make their own iterations of the cast
distinct and unique. This is what Lindbeck did to create the childish, playful,
and active sound that is Futaba Sakura.
Haru is the daughter of fast food industry tycoon Kunikazu
Okumura. As the daughter of Okumura Foods president, Haru is not permitted to contact
any friends, as she is primarily a pawn for her father to use for business
gain. He even goes so far as to arrange a marriage for Haru to partner with
another rich millionaire. She must break free from her shackles and Japanese
societal expectations to follow her father's commands. Only through this can
she become more than a pawn and be a Phantom Thief.
She is a mild-mannered individual, as she is expected to be
prim and proper whenever she is out in the world. This is a consequence of her
being groomed to represent the Okumura family, so outbursts must be swallowed
and controlled to avoid familial humiliation. However, Haru is earnest; she is
honest and sweet, wanting to do her best no matter the circumstances.
Haru enjoys the finer things, like tea and china sets.
Although, beneath the surface, she has a less refined streak. Her choice of
weapon is an axe, and she enjoys chopping logs in her spare time - an
interesting juxtaposition to her typical reserved behaviour. There are times
where Haru shows off less gentle tendencies, as she enjoys her enemies begging
for their lives and cutting down her opponents - indicating a sadistic side to
her.
Xanthe Huynh provides her voice for the role of Haru
Okumura. She has a long history of voice acting, with her speciality being
English dubbing work. Xanthe's sound is perfect for countless anime characters
in English, as she is typically cast in the "young, cute girl
role". She has worked in various video games and anime dubs, in some
well-known series, like Fire Emblem and Pokémon.
The world-famous teen detective, Goro Akechi, is a
mastermind at solving crime and catching criminals. He is relentless in his
view of right and wrong and does not agree with the outlaw methodology. If you
operate outside the law, righteous or not, you are still a criminal. Akechi's
black and white view of justice is at odds with the idea of the Phantom
Thieves, who see the system as a failed entity that cannot be trusted to do the
right thing.
For most of the game, Akechi is tasked with hunting down the
Phantom Thieves for the police. He goes on talk shows and interacts with the Protagonist
often. Akechi loves a chase and respects the tactics of the Phantom Thieves,
despite the fact he cannot permit them to continue their operations.
Akechi is friendly, well-mannered, polite and generally a
pleasant individual. He is rarely ever seen with any negative traits, and his
charismatic attitude acts as a beacon for the general public who want to see an
end to the Phantom Thieves. Although public opinion sways favour the gang
throughout the game, Akechi loses public appeal, which saddens him. There is a
yearning to be loved beneath Akechi's charisma.
Akechi is voiced by Robbie Daymond, a prolific voice actor
with significant success in anime, animation, and video game media. He has
performed extensively as a voice actor, in series like Naruto, One
Punch Man, Death Stranding, etc. Robbie Daymond provides a variety of
different styles to his characters, including when he is Akechi. While he may
be cheery and polite most of the time when his character is explored, Robbie
Daymond would have clearly had to change his delivery up to show different
faces of Akechi's personality.
Welcome to the Velvet Room. Igor appears as an older man,
with a long pointed nose and eyes, with bulging, bloodshot eyes. He is
incredibly tall and wears a black suit; the proprietor of the Velvet Room. This
space exists between dream and reality, where each Protagonist of the Persona
series understands themselves and unlocks their potential. He is a recurring
character across the Persona games and is central to the success of the cast of
each entry.
While he may seem to be an old man, he is anything but. His
powers verge on omniscience, as he seems to know of events before the time that
they occur. He uses this knowledge to gently guide protagonists to ensure they
follow the right path to complete their ultimate goal. Igor usually expresses
some form of consideration for his guests and seems to understand humanity and
what drives them. His attendants also follow this same curiosity.
The Persona 5 voice actor for Igor, David Lodge, is a
departure from his previous iterations. His vocal tone is deeper and more
intimidating in P5. Lodge was a clear choice for this role, as he has voiced
similarly deep sounding characters in the past, such as the Dragon from Dragon's
Dogma. While his vocal traits are deep and unsettling, he still retains a
degree of class to his delivery - maintaining the character's sophistication.
The Twin Wardens are the assistants to Igor in Persona 5,
with each game in the series having different wardens. The two characters are
polar opposites in personality, as Justine is aggressive and punitive as a
warden, and Caroline is quiet and thoughtful. Even as their personalities are
opposed, they do not clash too often. They have a playful relationship with
each other, with both being childish in their own way.
There is an apparent mystery behind these two characters, which
must be solved before the game's end. While the relationship between the girls
and the Protagonist is cold at first, it does grow and change throughout the
game.
Voice Actor Carrie Keranen lends her abilities to these two
characters. She has a history of a variety of roles, not all of which are
similar. For example, her performance as Misato Katsuragi in Evangelion is
distinctly different from Justine and Caroline's work. Carrie adopts childish
characteristics and a higher pitch to provide the right sound for the two
wardens, who are children.
